Silica In Water

silica in water

Silica is a natural element found in many well waters and municipal waters. Silica is the basic element from which silica sand is composed as manmade glass. It is not harmful to drink however in high amounts it can cause spots on glass shower stalls, fixtures and glassware. If you have a properly functioning water softener and you still have spots it may be caused by silica. (high dissolved solids can also cause water spots). Silica spots are more likely the cause if the spots are difficult or impossible to remove with ordinary commercially available household cleaners. The only currently available treatment for silica spots is whole house reverse osmosis.
